December Newsletter

Well... 2019 is coming to an end! I am so fortunate and blessed to end 2019 as your child's teacher. It is a year I will never forget!

Thank you for sending your child to school with warm clothes for recess. Please allow time for your child to practice zipping up his/her jacket independently and getting ready quickly at home! If your child comes to school with snow pants, I always make him/her wear them. I remind every child that whatever they come to school with, they are required to wear (unless they have a note). Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

In Language, we are finishing up procedural writing (ex. steps one would take to build a snowman). We are organizing our thoughts using first, then, next, last. We will be learning how to write a letter this month. A big writing activity will be writing a letter to Santa. Please continue to read with your child at home, practice weekly word wall words, and write in their journals! If you have any questions about the homework folder please do not hesitate to call me at school!

In Math, we just finished up 2D shapes. Throughout the month of December, we are learning about gathering and organizing data. We are posing questions, gathering data and then organizing it using graphs. For example, "Do you like playing in the snow?" Every student posed this question to their classmates. They then tallied the information, 'Yes' or 'No'. After, they graphed their results and analyzed the data (which one has the most/least).

In Science, Grade 1's have completed characteristics of living things unit and Grade 2's have completed growth and changes in animals. Next, Grade 1's will be exploring matter and energy in our lives. Grade 2's will be exploring different properties of liquids and solids.

In Religion, we will be focusing on Advent and preparing for the birth of Baby Jesus. The first Sunday of Advent is December 1st, second Sunday of Advent is December 8th, third Sunday of Advent is December 15th and fourth Sunday of Advent is December 22nd.

I have attached your child's username and password for Zorbits in the front of their agenda. This is a math website they can practice a number of different skills on at home.

Please enjoy this very exciting time of year with your children. I wish you all a safe and happy holiday! We have many fun activities and days to celebrate at school before they are home with you all for 2 weeks! I will be adding some more important dates to come!
