November

What a fun and exciting month October was! We celebrated Halloween and learned so
much! Thank you to everyone for participating in all the fun events that took place
(ex. Cake Walk, Thanksgiving Mass, school photos). The warm weather is officially gone
and we are well on our way to winter. This means we need to start bringing our hats,
mittens, gloves, etc. to school in order to stay warm at recess! Please remind your
children to keep these on during recess so they do not get sick or lose anything! If you
can pack an extra pair of socks for your child to keep at school that would be great
(when the snow comes sometimes their feet can get wet and would love a warm pair of
socks to change into).

In Language, we are learning about visualization. We are beginning to imagine and picture
what’s going on in stories (ex. I will be reading a story and ask what can you see, what
are you picturing, what can you imagine….). We are working on our word wall words every
day and love our daily 5 centres!

In Math, we are finishing up patterning. We have learned what a repeating pattern is (it
is something that repeats over and over again). We have also learned about growing/
shrinking patterns (adding 2 each time- 2,4,6,8,10 OR taking away 5 each time- 30, 25,
20, 15, 10, 5, 0). I have sent home a patterning booklet your child completed so you can
see his/her work and different repeating patterns we have  been working on (AB, AAB,
ABC, AABB). Please continue to explore numbers and practice subtraction and addition
at home! Next, we will be learning about 2D shapes!

In Science, we are finishing up characteristics of living things (Grade 1’s) and growth
and changes in animals (Grade 2’s). During the month of November, they will all be
completing an animal poster. Stay tuned to see the final products!

At the end of September I sent home your child’s homework folder. Please check his/
her bag to make sure it is not still in there. This folder is to keep at home for your child
to work on. Please do not send back anything. If your child would like to show me what
they are working on at home they can tweet it to me @bamccarney. I would love to see!!!
In this folder, there is a math sheet with some activities you can do at home. If you
need any materials please let me know. There is a W.W.W. sheet that also has activities.
They get 5 new W.W.W’s every Monday. Lastly, there is a writing sheet with different
prompts to help your child write in their journal. Encourage your child to use capital
letters at the start of their sentences, finger spaces, a sentence stopper ( . ! ?), and the
lines. The Homework Folder is to help continue your child’s learning at home. They will
benefit from doing a little every night! I have already seen so much progress in the
classroom. It is amazing to see!

Your child should be reading for at least 10 minutes a night.

Thank you for your support in your child’s learning at school and at home!

If your child requires a spoon for lunch please send one with them. We have plastic
ones in our classroom but we would like to only use these for emergencies (not on a
daily basis).
